The Borromeo Association is a Catholic media institution founded in 1845 and based in Bonn . The association is named after the Italian theologian Karl Borromeo . On behalf of several dioceses, he particularly supports Catholic libraries with media recommendations, reading promotion, and training.

The Borromeo Association has 15 German dioceses outside of Bavaria and East Germany as members. It is a service provider for around 2500 Catholic libraries. It is subsidized by the German Bishops' Conference . The association has set itself the goal of promoting the reading of good books by people of all ages .

Early years

The Borromäusverein was founded in 1845 in what was then the Prussian Rhine Province with the aim of "reviving Christian sentiments" and "spreading good writings". It was subordinate to the Archbishop of Cologne and had its headquarters in Bonn from the start. The lawyer and center politician August Reichensperger was particularly committed to the association, whose aim was broad popular education. For this purpose local associations were founded, whose paying members could borrow books free of charge from the association library. Local associations were founded in 1712 by 1895. From 1900 the Borromeo Libraries were also made accessible to non-members.

Restructuring since 2005

Due to the status as a non-profit organization, a separation of non-material and economic services began. In 2005, the logistics area was taken over by an external service provider. A total of 30 employees had to be laid off. The economic business areas of sales and consulting, especially for Catholic public libraries - usually referred to with the abbreviation KÖB - were outsourced in 2009 together with 25 employees through the establishment of borro medien gmbh . Six employees were still employed in the club. The Borromeo Association remained the sole shareholder of the GmbH. But just two years later, borro medien gmbh had to be sold to Bonifatius GmbH for economic reasons. The cooperation between the association and the GmbH in the Borromäushaus in Bonn was retained. The number of employees in the association was increased from six to nine in order to be able to continue to coordinate media recommendations and educational offers for library employees. The cooperation with the Sankt Michaelsbund in this area was maintained. At the end of 2016, the cooperation contract for library services for the libraries with borro medien gmbh was terminated and a new contract was concluded with ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH from 2017 .

Facilities

The Borromeo House

1912-13 the Borromäushaus was built on the Wittelsbacherring in Bonn. This arose from the desire to be able to offer the librarian days, which were first offered in 1911, in their own premises instead of in the Bonn Citizens' Hall and the university. In 2011 the house had to be sold. The association stayed in the premises as a tenant. The Borromeo House stands as a monument under monument protection .

Librarian School and University of Applied Sciences

In 1921 a librarian school was opened. During the time of National Socialism the school had to be closed. In 1984 it was converted into a university of applied sciences for public libraries, but the Borromeo Association had to close it in 2003.

Reviews

Books are recommended primarily through a review magazine. In 1903 this was first distributed under the name Borromeo Leaves, in 1906 it was renamed Book World and later the new book . From 1974 the magazine is published in cooperation with the Sankt Michaelsbund responsible for the Bavarian Catholic libraries under the name of the new book / book profiles . In order to also offer a forum for other media, the magazine has been published since 1999 under the name Medienprofile .

Projects to promote reading

At the beginning of the millennium, the association developed several programs to promote reading in children and adolescents. The offers Ich bin Bibfit and the reading case are aimed at kindergartens and libraries.

About a kind of seal of approval are since 2009 with the award " bv. Monthly media recommendations in the area of religious children's book, Erstlesebuch, novel and non-fiction award - Special recommendation".

With the first-reading book of the month , the association awards a children's book that stands out from the mass of first-reading offerings in terms of content and design and can make an important contribution to promoting reading .
