BAFO (library data exchange format) is a standard for data exchange between libraries with different library software , which is mainly used by the Catholic public libraries of the Borromeo Association.

The main programs used by the libraries of the Borromeo Association are:

The desired exchange of bibliographical information and other metadata on media is difficult due to the various file formats . For this reason, the Software and Data Exchange Technical Committee of the Borromeo Association's conference created the library data exchange format BAFO. Large parts of BAFO are based on the SBC standard maintained by IBTC for their own products and the MAB format .

For the exchange of bibliographical information and information on library holdings , BAFO describes a number of rules and agreements on how the data from one library can get into the IT system of another library, how it is correctly read in and entered in the statistics and how these holdings and theirs statistical data are to be treated during the return transfer. In addition, BAFO describes in a binding manner how databases of end customer brochures and book exhibitions of the Borromeo Association are to be handled.

The software that identifies the data exchange as functionality in accordance with BAFO is thoroughly tested by the technical committee. This ensures that the guaranteed functionality is actually available and can be used without problems in the practice of libraries and specialist offices.
