The BVS library management system is used today in numerous libraries in German-speaking countries. In the area of church libraries with predominantly volunteer employees, BVS is the most widely used software. It thus sets the standard within the Catholic library work of the Borromäusverein and in the German Association of Evangelical Libraries .
It was developed in 1989 by volunteers at the Owinger library and is now used in over 2,700 libraries in Germany and beyond.
BVS is based on the SBC standard. The software and data exchange committee of the specialist conference of the Borromeo Association created the library data exchange format BAFO on this basis .
