Maricopa is a city in Pinal County in the US state of Arizona . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , it had 43,482 residents. The city is located about 50 km south of Phoenix and is part of the associated metropolitan area .

Maricopa's geographic coordinates are 33 ° 3 '  N , 112 ° 3'  W (33.056702, −112.046656). The urban area is very irregular in shape.

history

Originally the place was called Maricopa Junction because the route to Phoenix branched off here. After the nearby town of Maricopa Station changed its name to Heaton in 1887 , the addition 'Junction' was dropped.

Maricopa was not incorporated until October 15, 2003, making it the 88th City in Arizona. Between 2000, when Maricopa was classified as a census-designated place by the United States Census Bureau , and 2010, the population of Maricopa rose from 1,040 to 43,482 inhabitants.
