Youngstown is a US city in Arizona in Maricopa County . It is located in the metropolitan area of Phoenix . Youngtown is considered the first place in the USA in which a so-called retirement town was planned and laid out from 1955.

geography

Youngtown is located about 16 km west of Phoenix on the east bank of the Agua Fria River and south of US Route 60 . The place was built on a surface of about 1.6 km² on desert soil. The neighboring cities are clockwise from north to south Sun City , Peoria , Glendale , Litchfield Park and El Mirage to the west.

history

The idea to build a retirement town originally came from Ben Schleifer , a Jewish immigrant from Minsk in Belarus . In 1954, Ben Schleifer, Frances Geer and Elmer Johns founded the Youngtown Development Company , the aim of which was to build an age-appropriate city for residents only over 55 years old on the grounds of a former cattle ranch. In 1955, 85 out of 125 completed homes were sold. In the years that followed, there were advertising campaigns and television programs that focused Americans' attention on the Arizona region and the new retirement town. 1960 Youngtown got an independent administration. In the same year, the retirement town of Sun City was founded in the neighborhood , which accelerated Youngtown's growth. At the same time the city got a post office, a grocery store, a pharmacy and a gas station so that the residents no longer had to go to the neighboring towns to go shopping. 1960 (was in Youngstown the first office of AARP AARP dt. American Association of Retired ) opened a lobbying organization in the US, which promotes the interests of older people. In the 1970s, customer-specific houses could also be built and in 1998 the age restriction was lifted so that families with children could also live. As a result, playgrounds, kindergartens and schools were built.
