Cimarron is a place in Colfax County in the US state of New Mexico in the United States with 917 inhabitants ( as of 2000) .
geography
The place is located in the southwest of the county, in northeast New Mexico, is in the north about 20 km from Colorado and has a total area of 5.0 km² without any significant water surface. To the west is the Philmont Scout Ranch , an adventure park owned by the Boy Scouts of America . Also nearby is Chase Ranch , the original location of the first Marlboro Man commercial .
history
The trapper Lucien B. Maxwell came to the area in 1842 , worked on the Beaubien-Miranda Ranch and married a daughter of the owner. The dowry was 15,000 acres . In 1858 he built his own buildings on the site of the present location and subsequently became the largest rancher in the United States with a land area of 1.7 million acres. 1872 to 1882 Cimarron was the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ).
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 917 people lived here in 382 households and 255 families. The population density was 185 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 77.5% White, 0.1% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian and other groups.
Of the 382 households, 34.0% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.2% were married couples living together, 8.1% were a single mother, 33.0% were non-families, 29.1% consisted of single households and 13.6% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
In relation to the entire town, the population was composed of 27.0% residents under 18 years of age, 7.6% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.1% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.1% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.1% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 106.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 102.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 27,875 USD , and the median income for a family was 30,677 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,125 versus $ 19,792 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,248. 9.1% of families and 12.5% of the population are below the poverty line.
