Clayton is a city in Union County in the US state of New Mexico in the United States with 2524 inhabitants ( 2000) . Clayton is the county seat of Union County.
geography
The city is located in the east of the county in the northeasternmost corner of New Mexico, is in the east 3 km from Texas , in the northeast 4 km from Oklahoma and has a total area of 12.2 km² without significant water surface.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census , there were 2524 people in 1079 households and 691 families here. The population density was 206.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 75.36% white population, 1.07% Native American people, 0.16% Asian, 0.20% residents from the Pacific island area.
Of the 1,079 households, 30.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 47.60% were married couples living together, 11.70% were a single mother and 35.90% were non-families, 33.70% consisted of single households and 18.20% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
In relation to the entire town, the population was composed of 27.70% residents under 18 years of age, 6.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 18.70% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.4 men.
