history
In 1898 a railway line of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad reached the newly established town of Alamogordo and it was planned to expand the route further north into the mining area at White Oaks and beyond. For this purpose, the area of the Sacramento Mountains , from which the necessary timber could also be extracted, was assessed and the project was deemed feasible. In June 1899, the place Cloudcroft was built along the planned route; it was assumed that tourists would come there because of the scenic location.
In 1900 the railway line finally reached the place. Initially, three trains arrived a day, but the importance of the railway line declined as automobiles became more popular. The last passenger train ran in 1938, the last freight train in 1947 via Cloudcroft.
The place has changed little over the years. There are now more second homes that are used in the summer, but the number of permanent residents has not changed significantly.
