Abiquiú in New Mexico

Abiquiú ( Haʼagizh in Navajo ) is a small community-free town in Rio Arriba County , in northern New Mexico , in the southwestern United States, and about 85 km north of Santa Fe . By 1730 it was the third largest settlement in what is now New Mexico. It was founded by the Spaniards through the settlement of Genízaros (Hispanic Indians ), who were supposed to protect the then border area from raids by nomadic tribes. The painter Georgia O'Keeffe lived here from 1949 until her death in 1986 at the age of 98. Today the region is known for the annual Abiquiú Studio Tour, which is celebrated on the weekend of Columbus Day.

Mentions

Abiquiú is mentioned in Willa Cathers novella Death Comes for the Archbishop from 1927 in the 5th book (1st chapter). In addition, the regions around Abiquiú are set in The Canyon by Douglas Preston , published in 2005. These are described there very easily.
