Embryo (also the original title; also shown as The Brut of Evil and Embryo - Frucht des Schreckens ) is a thriller / horror film that was made in 1976 under the direction of Ralph Nelson . The main roles were played by Rock Hudson and Barbara Carrera .

action

The geneticist Dr. Paul Holliston does research on dog fetuses. He manages to manipulate a Doberman fetus in such a way that it develops rapidly and becomes a fully-grown animal in a short time. This animal is not only highly intelligent, but - unnoticed by the scientist - also a vicious killer. Holliston extends his experiments to human fetuses; He succeeds in accelerating their growth so that a fetus transforms into a beautiful young woman, Victoria, within a few weeks. The woman becomes his mistress. But when she becomes pregnant by him, the woman begins to age too quickly. Holliston has to experience helplessly as Victoria becomes a murder machine in order to stay alive herself. Holliston prevents her from killing a baby and pursues his creature, which is aging more and more, to a park, where he wants to strangle Victoria, who has meanwhile grown old. However, he is prevented from doing so by passers-by who think he is crazy and call the ambulance. When Victoria is put in the ambulance, Holliston learns to his horror that Victoria is pregnant and he is the father. Paul stays in the park screaming in horror while the ambulance drives away.

criticism

The lexicon of international films saw a “homely (n) horror film based on the Frankenstein motif” . The Los Angeles Times saw a “thoroughly original SF thriller that is ok until it ends after an unfounded horrible climax goes completely off its hinges ", the New York Post an" unbearable melodramatic mishmash ". And for some visitors something completely different was important: Rock Hudson "drops his pants for the first time in the film".

The work's special effects were widely praised.

Remarks

  • Before Holliston conducts his experiment, an excerpt from Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam can be seen in the background - a reference to Holliston's attempt to play God.
  • The German premiere on video took place in 1982.
  • In Germany, the film has so far only been officially released in a cut version.
  • Other publication titles in Germany are Create to Die and Created to Kill .
