Joyce Diane Brothers (née Bauer ; born October 20, 1927 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ; † May 13, 2013 in Fort Lee , New Jersey ) was an American psychologist , television presenter and columnist .

Live and act

Joyce Brothers was born in Brooklyn in 1927. Her parents, Estelle and Morris K. Bauer, were both lawyers. Her family was of Jewish origin .

She graduated from Far Rockaway High School in January 1944. From Cornell University , she made a double degree in home economics and psychology . Joyce was a member of the Sigma Delta Tau student union . She received her PhD in psychology from Columbia University .

In 1949 Joyce married internist Milton Brothers, who died of cancer in 1989 . The couple had a daughter named Lisa Brothers. Joyce Brothers lived in Fort Lee, New Jersey, until her death at the age of 85.

Joyce Brothers became famous in 1955 by winning the American game show The $ 64,000 Question . There she seemed to be an expert in boxing. At first, Joyce hadn't planned on choosing boxing as an area; this was recommended to her by the sponsors and she agreed. Joyce read every boxing book she could find and was able to answer the tough questions on the show. Joyce stated that she has a good memory.

In 1959 there were allegations that quiz shows were rigged. However, Joyce stated that she had not cheated and had not been given correct answers beforehand. The subsequent examinations confirmed her statement.

Her success on the game show gave her the chance to co-comment on CBS on a boxing match between Carmen Basilio and Sugar Ray Robinson .

In August 1958, Joyce Brothers got their own television show, but it had nothing to do with sports. On her show, Joyce gave relationship advice and answered questions from the audience.

For more than four decades, Joyce worked on various advisory programs on television and radio. From 1960 to 2013 she wrote a column in Good Housekeeping magazine . In 1964, Joyce interviewed the Beatles on their first visit to the United States . She also published several books.

She died on May 13, 2013 at the age of 85 in Fort Lee , New Jersey .

Movie

In 1976, Brothers starred in the feature film The Brut of Evil ( Embryo ). She also had cameo appearances in A Single Seldom Comes Alone (1984) and The Naked Cannon (1988). She also played herself in two episodes of The Nanny series .
