The Sportgemeinschaft Essen-Schönebeck 19/68 eV , or SGS Essen for short , is a sports club from Essen . The club comes from a merger of the clubs VfB Borbeck and SC Grün-Weiß Schönebeck in 2000. The flagship of SG Essen-Schönebeck is the women's soccer team, which has played in the Bundesliga since 2004 . Until the 2012/13 season, all women's and girls' teams competed under the name SG Essen-Schönebeck .
history
On March 21, 1973, a women's soccer department was founded at SC Grün-Weiß Schönebeck . In 1976 he was promoted to the Niederrhein Association League, which was the top division at the time. After a temporary descent, the rise was celebrated in 1992. Five years later, they made the leap into the regional league for the first time, from which they were immediately relegated. With a strongly rejuvenated team, they managed to get back up and became runner-up right away. After another second place, they slipped back into midfield and in 2003 had to tremble for a long time to avoid relegation.
A year later, the team surprisingly became champions of the Regionalliga West . The team, now trained by Ralf Agolli , was able to strengthen itself through a number of former players of FCR 2001 Duisburg and started the season with the aim of qualifying for the new 2nd Bundesliga . After a successful promotion round, the club made the leap into the Bundesliga . You could establish yourself there in the first two years. Behind the top clubs from Frankfurt and Potsdam they have the third highest average attendance in the league.
In 2007 SGS reached the semi-finals in the DFB Cup for the first time . The opponent was local rival FCR 2001 Duisburg . In front of 3,750 spectators, the highest number of spectators in the club's history, the Essen women kept up for a long time, but had to admit defeat 5: 1 after extra time. The game was broadcast live by WDR . In the Bundesliga season, the club could not improve due to many injuries.
After the team achieved the best placement in the club's history with fifth place in the 2008/09 season , the Essenes had to tremble for relegation a year later until the last matchday. A 1-1 draw with direct rivals SC Freiburg ensured that they would remain in the Bundesliga. The contract with coach Agolli was terminated by mutual agreement at the end of the season. The 2010/11 season brought the SGS another season in the relegation battle under their new coach Markus Högner , which ended with 9th place one place better than the previous season. A year later, Högner led his team to fifth. At the beginning of the 2017/2018 season, Philipp Symanzik moved from 1. FFC Frankfurt as the new managing director to SGS, as the previous manager Willi Wißing has retired after 14 years as a full-time Bundesliga manager. At this point in time, Wißing had been active in the club for around 50 years and during this time played a key role in the further development of the club as a whole and, in particular, of the women's football department. In the 2017/18 season, under the new head coach Daniel Kraus , who joined SGS Essen in summer 2016, a clear club-internal Bundesliga point record was achieved. In November 2018, the club announced that Kraus would leave the club after three years at the end of the season for SC Freiburg. Markus Högner (since 07/2019) was presented again as his successor.
A highlight was reaching the DFB Cup final in 2014 , which was lost 3-0 to 1. FFC Frankfurt . After another six years, SGS Essen has again managed to reach the DFB Cup final of the 2019/20 season in Cologne after winning 3-1 in the semi-final over Bayer 04 Leverkusen . SGS Essen lost the final against VfL Wolfsburg on penalties .

environment
Stadion
The first women's team has played its home games at Sportpark Am Hallo since its promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004 . The Helmut Rahn sports complex in Essen-Frohnhausen serves as the training ground . The remaining teams play and train on two artificial turf in the district sports facility . Since this does not meet the requirements of the women's Bundesliga, the Bundesliga games were played in the Sportpark Am Hallo. Since the 2012/13 season, SGS's home games have been taking place in the newly built Essen stadium.
Youth work
For financial reasons, the association attaches great importance to working with young talent. As of the 2007/08 season, the association enters into a cooperation with the Bockmühle comprehensive school . Two entry classes with talented players are to be set up at the school. The U-17 juniors have been playing in the U-17 Bundesliga West / Southwest since the 2012/13 season .

More teams
The second women's team made it to the Regionalliga West in 2006 . After the descent in 2011, the immediate rise again succeeded. Since the SGS Essen is increasingly acting as a training club, the U20 was set up as a regional league team for the 2017/18 season and, after a third place this season and a successful relegation, made it to the newly established single-track 2nd Bundesliga. The second division season 2018/19 was finished bottom of the table, so that the second women's team will again compete in the Regionalliga West in the 2019/20 season. The 3rd team plays in the Lower Rhine League. The U17 is a founding member of the junior Bundesliga.
The first men's team made it to the district league for the first time in 2020.
