Markus Högner (born April 26, 1967 in Ettringen (Eifel) ) is a former German soccer player and current soccer coach .

Life

Högner played for Alemannia Aachen from 1988 to 1992 and from 1999 to 2004 . He also played for TuRU Düsseldorf , LD Alajuelense , Rhenania Würselen and 1. FC Union Solingen . In the 1988/89 season he played three games in the 2nd Bundesliga for Alemannia Aachen. With LD Alajuelense he failed twice to win the Costa Rican championship and was runner-up in 1994 and 1995.

In 2000 he became the player-coach of the German national beach soccer team . From 2004 to 2006 he coached the U16 team at Alemannia Aachen, and since 2006 the U19 team. For the 2008/09 season he was coach of the second team at FC Schalke 04 , but was released in May 2009.

From May 2010 to summer 2016, Högner was the head coach of the Bundesliga women at SGS Essen .

In September 2016 he became Steffi Jones' assistant coach alongside Verena Hagedorn for the German women's national soccer team. He has been the only assistant since Hagedorn moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in April 2017. On May 31, 2018, Högner became assistant coach for the women's football team at VfL Wolfsburg . The contract was terminated on January 8, 2019. Three days after contract termination in Wolfsburg , Högner signed a contract as head coach of SGS Essen , starting the 2019/2020 season on July 1, 2019.
