Evamarie Sander (born July 27, 1928 in Cologne ) is a German biologist and professor of phytopathology and phytovirology who taught at the University of Tübingen .

Life

Evamarie Sander received her PhD from Cornell University in 1958 . This was followed by two years of postdoctoral research in Cambridge. She worked at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research , Biochemical Department, in Tübingen and was an assistant at the Biological Institute of the University of Tübingen. In 1970 she was habilitated cumulatively . She was the first female professor in the natural science faculty of the University of Tübingen. She dealt with phytopathology and phytovirology until she retired in 1993. One of her former students, Helga Aberle , said at a festive event that Evamarie Sander had set an example of what it means to be female. With her ladylike demeanor and appearance, she was always a role model and an ideal.

Portrait in the Tübingen Professorengalerie

In 2005, as a foundation of her students, a portrait of Evamarie Sander painted by Susanne Höfler was unveiled in the Tübingen Professorengalerie , in which mostly male portraits usually hang. It shows her surrounded by objects from her professional life: with her left hand she leans on a model of the tobacco mosaic virus , under which the writings of Frederick Bawden , Pliny the Elder and Aristotle lie. The phytopathologist holds a tobacco leaf infected by a virus in her right hand .
