Gustav Essig (born November 18, 1880 in Truchtelfingen , † October 23, 1962 in Murrhardt ) was a German painter .

Life

Gustav Essig was the son of the Truchtelfingen pastor and the younger brother of the writer Hermann Essig . He went to school in Weinsberg and graduated from high school in Heilbronn . After graduating from high school, he completed a degree in architecture at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences . In 1904 he attended the arts and crafts school, where he received the exam for drawing teacher. In 1904 he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and learned drawing with Peter Halm and painting with Franz von Stuck until 1909 . 1909-13 he ran his own painting school in Munich. From 1911 he took part in the Great Art Exhibition in the Glass Palace. In 1916 he was a member of the Munich Secession .

Throughout his life he remained stuck with representationalism, at the interface between impressionism and realism with a lightened palette. In the 1920s and thereafter, he was also influenced by the New Objectivity . He financed his living primarily with portraits. In 1930 he left Munich and moved to Murrhardt , where he died in 1962.
