Nicholaston stone chest
The Nicholaston Stone Chest is north of the A4118 (road) on the west of the Gower Peninsula in West Glamorgan , Wales . The small stone box measures 1.2 m by 0.9 m. All six surviving bearing stones are also very small. Two front portal stones form a narrow paved entrance in the northeast. The north-east-south-west oriented box has a pavement and is covered by two small cap stones. A laterally displaced stone could have been the locking stone.
The stone box excavated in 1940 lies in the center of an overgrown 37 m long, 20 m wide and up to 1.2 m high hill. In 1939, the year it was found, the hill surrounded by large curbs turned out to be largely made of peat. There was no evidence of a corridor leading through the hill to the box. The construction method (with access) in the Nordic stone box area would have meant that the system would have been classified as a grave box .
