Matthaeus Hiller

Matthaeus Hiller , also Matthäus Hiller (born February 15, 1646 in Stuttgart , † February 3, 1725 in Königsbronn ) was a German Protestant theologian , university professor and abbot .

Life

Hiller was born in Stuttgart as the son of the Württemberg government secretary. He first attended school in Stuttgart, then went to the Hirsau convent school in 1662 and then switched to the theological preparatory studies at the Bebenhausen convent school in 1664 . From 1666 he attended the Tübingen Abbey , obtained his master’s degree in 1669 and then devoted himself to biblical research. In 1673 he became a repetiteur at the Tübingen monastery.

Hiller became a temporary preacher in Bad Cannstatt in 1676 , in Stuttgart in 1677 and in the same year a deacon in Herrenberg . In 1685 he moved to the Bebenhausen monastery as a preacher and professor . In 1692 he accepted a call as a full professor of logic, metaphysics and the Hebrew language at the University of Tübingen . In 1698 he changed to the professorship of theology, Greek and Oriental languages ​​and at the same time he was appointed Ephorus of the Tübingen monastery and pedagogue . In the same year he was rector of the university.

Hiller was appointed abbot at Königsbronn Monastery in 1716 . Thereupon he resigned all offices in Tübingen in order to be able to devote himself entirely to scientific work. He is said to have had an excellent knowledge of Hebrew and to have done research on the Old Testament .

Honors

After him is the plant genus Hilleria Vell. from the pokeweed family (Phytolaccaceae).
