Georg Peter Groß (born April 11, 1782 in Schwäbisch Hall ; † April 29, 1858 there ) was a German painter and draftsman.

Life

Georg Peter Groß was the eldest son of coppersmith Friedrich Gottlieb Groß, who came from a Haller salt boiler family, and Maria Katharina, née Mulfinger. He learned the arts and crafts a. a. in Paris and returned to Schwäbisch Hall in 1828/29, where he then mainly worked. He was trained in classicism , but also opened up to Biedermeier romanticism in his landscapes .

In addition to the landscape pictures, which he mainly painted, he also made a few portraits and drawn print templates. Groß was a member of the Haller Schützen Society and is considered the most important painter of shooting targets in the 19th century. He designed many of these discs, some of which he also donated himself; around 60 of them have been preserved. In 1829, on the occasion of the birthday of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg , he painted a shooting target dedicated to the king with Fortuna for the shooting festival in Schwäbisch Hall, based on a model from The Great Luck by Albrecht Dürer . In 1830 he painted a shooting target The Three Wise Men with the cartridges of the Dreikönig Inn in Hall , which was donated by its host, Johann Gottlieb Fritzlin.

From 1827 to 1843 he exhibited his landscapes and cityscapes at the Stuttgart Art Association . Some pictures were paid for from the Württemberg court disposition fund from 1826 to 1828, including a picture of St. Michael (Schwäbisch Hall) , one of Maulbronn , two of the Weibertreu castle ruins and one of the Löwenstein castle (now in the Württemberg State Museum ). Occasionally he also took up political topics such as the 1830 Paris July Revolution . He portrayed Prince Heinrich of Württemberg and Friedrich David Gräter from Schwäbisch Hall (today in the graphic collection of the Historical Association for Württemberg Franconia ). As a commissioned work, he portrayed the political scientist Robert Mohl for the Tübingen Professorengalerie in 1846 .
