Life

Gottfried Schreiber lived in Tübingen since 1704 at the latest, where he worked as a portrait painter from that year. Among other things, his customers had to include members of the university because he had "academic citizenship". However, only one portrait (Johann Conrad Klemm) from 1714 is known, which is preserved in the Tübingen professors' gallery . Otherwise no signed pictures have been received.

In a joint letter with Johann Emmanuel Schleich and Johann Glocker , Schreiber complained to the university senate about Johann Christoph Kayßer that he was staying in Tübingen without authorization and that they were taking away the scarce work they were already doing in Tübingen.

Schreiber also made wall paintings. In 1736 he used the black secco technique to paint the university prison with biblical scenes and sayings that were supposed to remind the imprisoned students to repent and repent. Werner Fleischhauer rates this painting as very rough. In 1739/40 Schreiber worked in Hohentübingen Castle and in the Jakobus Church .

His two sons also became painters:

  • Jakob Daniel Schreiber was a very popular book painter after 1744 .
  • Johann Gottfried Schreiber II. (* Around 1708 in Tübingen; † 1750)
