Life

Johann Gabriel Schleich was a son of the Tübingen painter Johann Emanuel Schleich , from whom he also learned the painting trade. Similar to his father, he also managed to acquire academic citizenship, so that he was allowed to make portraits of the members of the university, similar to his contemporaries Johann Gottfried Schreiber , Johann Glocker and Wolfgang Dietrich Majer . This could not be taken for granted, because at that time Tübingen only offered work opportunities for very few painters. In 1717 his father, Johann Gottfried Schreiber and Johann Glocker complained to the university senate about Johann Christoph Kayßer in a joint letterthat he was staying in Tübingen without authorization and taking away the work that was already scarce in Tübingen. Although Kayßer died in 1720 and Johann Emanuel Schleich in 1729, Johann Glocker was forced to leave Tübingen temporarily due to a lack of orders.

Apparently Schleich succeeded in getting enough commissions, because after he married Maria Rosina Majer (probably a relative of Wolfgang Dietrich Majer) on April 17, 1731 in Tübingen, his family grew systematically. Nothing else is known about his life. Schleich is only one work - a portrait of Christoph Matthäus Pfaff (in the stored by the university professor Gallery ) - obtained so that not about his work much can be said. However, it is possible that Schleich participated in the illustrations of the richly illustrated "Tübingen Bible" published by Pfaff and Johann Christian Klemm in 1729 .
