Theodor Gessler , from 1864 von Gessler , (born August 16, 1824 in Ellwangen ; † July 27, 1886 in Urach ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life and work

After attending grammar school in Ellwangen, Theoder Gessler studied Protestant theology and philosophy from 1841 to 1842 . From 1842 to 1847 he studied law in Tübingen and Heidelberg and was a member of the Germania Tübingen fraternity . In 1847 he entered the state service in Württemberg . After various stations he was city judge in Stuttgart in 1851 , from 1853 with the title of senior judicial officer. In 1856 he became a lecturer in criminal law and criminal procedure, and in 1857 he was a full professor of law at the University of Tübingen. On April 23, 1863, Theodor Gessler became Chancellor of the University of Tübingen. From 1864 to 1876 he was co-editor of the courtroom magazine . In 1874 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. phil. Hc) by the University of Tübingen .

politics

In 1862 he was elected to the state parliament in the constituency of Crailsheim . When he became Chancellor of the University of Tübingen in 1863, he resigned his Crailsheim mandate after having automatically been a privileged member of Parliament as Chancellor. On December 10, 1868, he won the election for President of the State Parliament in the seventh ballot against Rudolf Probst by just four votes. After his election as minister of culture, Theodor Gessler resigned from his mandate in 1870.

From May 3, 1870 to August 28, 1885, Gessler was Minister of State in the Department of Churches and Schools , as the Ministry of Culture in Württemberg was officially called. In 1885 he was under discussion as Minister of State for the Interior, but retired on August 28, 1885 for health reasons.

family

Theodor Gessler was the son of the camera administrator and finance councilor Christian Gessler (1788–1863) and Luise Margarethe Gessler, née. Seyfferlein (1787–1847) and had six siblings, including the Württemberg Interior Minister Ernst von Geßler . Theodor von Gessler married Mathilde Gaupp (1828–1887) in 1851. The marriage had three children, including Reinhold von Gessler (1862–1915), Ministerial Director in the Württemberg Department of Justice .
