Art Nouveau crematorium in the Prague cemetery

The Pragfriedhof in Stuttgart-Nord is the third largest cemetery in Stuttgart with an area of ​​21 hectares and the largest in Stuttgart with 29,000 grave sites. It consists of a general part for all religions and an Israelite part .

The burial site below the Pragsattel was outside the city at the time of planning and when it was opened in 1873. The facility, which is now around 20 hectares in size and located on a slope, is divided by a main avenue and a cross avenue, which allow a view of the celebration hall, the only crematorium in Stuttgart. This Art Nouveau building was built between 1905 and 1907 according to the plans of the architect Wilhelm Scholter . Other buildings on the grounds of the cemetery are the administration building at Friedhofstrasse 44, the chapel at Friedhofstrasse 46 and the former morgue at Friedhofstrasse 48, which was later converted into an office and residential building and is now surrounded by a sample exhibition of grave design. These buildings date from the years 1873 to 1876 and were created by August Beyer . Historically, they fall back on Gothic forms. As a whole, the cemetery is considered a cultural monument.

In 1874 the cemetery on the east side was expanded to include members of the Jewish faith after the Jewish part of the Hoppenlauf cemetery could no longer be used. Between 1881 and 1883 it was enclosed and a gate in neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the architect Adolf Wolff . In 1925 a memorial was erected there for the Jewish soldiers who died in Stuttgart during the First World War . In 1944 the cemetery hall was destroyed by the effects of the war. The Jewish part of the Prague Cemetery was repaired after the Nazi era and in 1947 a memorial for the victims of National Socialism was added. Today there are hardly any burials in this part of the cemetery; Instead, the Jewish part of the central cemetery in Steinhaldenfeld, which was laid out between 1937 and 1938, is used. There are over 2,300 gravestones and memorial stones in the Jewish part of the Prague cemetery. This part of the Prague cemetery is separated from the rest of the complex by a fence and is not accessible to the general public.

In 1953 the first anonymous urn community was created.

In 2003 a burial place for miscarried children was inaugurated. Another special feature for Stuttgart is the option of burial urns in the columbarium .

The Russian Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky is located on the site of the Prague Cemetery.

Israelite part

The Israelite part of the Prague Cemetery is on the eastern side of the general part, i.e. on the right as seen from the main entrance on Friedhofstrasse. The damaged in a bombing raid in 1944 neo-Gothic entrance is also on the road and cemetery was restored in the 1960s, but the Dachbekrönung the two became pillars pinnacles with crabs and finial not restored.

The area of ​​the Israelite part extends in a long narrow strip from Friedhofstrasse to Eckartstrasse near the Martinskirche. The cemetery is divided into 22 sections, which lie in pairs to the right and left of the middle path up to section 18 and then form rectangular or trapezoidal fields over the entire width of the cemetery.

The numbering begins on Friedhofstrasse with section 1 and ends with section 22 at Martinskirche. The boundary stones of the departments bear the corresponding Roman numerals I – XXII. The official numbering of the graves consists of the department number, the row number and the grave number. The rows are parallel to the fence and are counted upwards from west to east, i.e. from the fence of the general cemetery to the fence of the Israelite cemetery. The grave with the number II-V-882 is for example in Division II, Row V and has the consecutive grave number 882. The urn grove is on the eastern edge of the divisions 19-22, seen from the main entrance on the right edge. Unlike the other graves, the rows are counted from the outer fence.

The cemetery and its graves are described in a monograph by Pastor Joachim Hahn ( #Hahn 1992 ). It contains an outline of the history of the cemetery, an alphabetical allocation list, an allocation plan and photos of selected gravestones. Extensive information is also provided by Alemannia Judaica , the working group for research into the history of Jews in southern Germany and the surrounding area.

Visiting modalities : To visit the cemetery you have to collect the gate key from the administration. This is located in the building to the right of the main entrance at Friedhofstrasse 44 and is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. The main gate of the Israelite Cemetery is at the right end of the cemetery wall in Friedhofstrasse.

Urban climate

The Pragfriedhof is one of the most important green spaces in the Stuttgart area and is included in the planning of the Stuttgart 21 project . Its dense tree population prevents a significant night-time cooling, as occurs in parks that are more openly planted.

Events

The Prague cemetery was repeatedly the scene of the event from 2000 emotions be- that the teatro piccolo organized together with the northern community. It is a nocturnal walk through the cemetery with several stations on the subject of transience and eternity.

Connection to local public transport

From 1885 there was a bus route between the Pragfriedhof and Schwabstrasse. A year later there was a tram line operated by the new Stuttgart tram company Lipken und Cie . Nowadays the Pragfriedhof can be reached via the stops Pragfriedhof with the tram lines U5, U6, U7 and U15 and Budapester Platz with the U12 that runs there.
