Karl Kopp (born October 24, 1825 in Wasseralfingen , † March 1, 1897 in Stuttgart ) was a German sculptor and university professor .

Life

Karl Kopp was trained at the Stuttgart Art School and the Stuttgart Polytechnic . He worked on the “Moorish” Wilhelma buildings , which were built according to plans by the architect Karl Ludwig von Zanth , before moving to Paris . There he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts . After his return to Germany he became a drawing teacher at the advanced training school in Biberach an der Riss , before he became a teacher for ornament drawing and modeling at the Polytechnic in Stuttgart in 1862. In 1868 he was appointed professor. He also taught figure modeling at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts and was a member of the expert commission at the Conservatory of Patriotic Art and Antiquity Monuments.

In the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , his work as a teacher is praised, while “as a practicing artist” he did not “rise above the average”. Nevertheless, Kopp was a prolific artist who mainly created and restored architectural jewelry. This included sculptural works on the old Stuttgart main station as well as on the building of the Polytechnic and the Palace of Justice.

The polytechnic building at Keplerstrasse 7 was built from 1864 according to plans by Joseph von Egle . The plastic jewelry that Kopp created for this building was described at the inauguration as follows: “The entablature of the main portal is supported by two female figures, which are characterized by the attributes given to them: one as a technical science, the other as a commercial one Art. To the right and left of this portal are the very lofty heads of two famous people from Württemberg, namely Jörg Syrlins , the master of the Ulm choir stalls and Matthäus Böblinger ’s, the master builder of the Frauenkirche in Esslingen and the Münster in Ulm. On the upper floors there are medallion portraits of excellent scholars and technicians, namely in the central building by Germans - Carl Friedrich Gauß , Joseph Fraunhofer , Carl Friedrich Schinkel , Ferdinand Redtenbacher , - in the two side wings by non-Germans, namely in the lower one by Michel Angelo and Gaspard Monge , in the upper part by Isaac Newton and George Stephenson . The gable field, which crowns the central building, represents, in very sublime sculptural work, in the middle the Württembergia, which descends from the throne to a croup (sic!) Of young men at the foot of it engaged in mathematical and scientific, mechanical, architectural and commercial studies walks and brings them as a happily welcomed gift the deed of foundation of the polytechnic school, which, as it were, contains the subsequent history of this institution in a few but significant words: 1832 commercial school, 1840 polytechnic school, 1862 technical college. “The building was Badly damaged by a bomb in the summer of 1944; Nevertheless, there were plans in the post-war period to keep the Egle building as a library. However, due to lack of space, it was canceled; in its place is the college building Z today .

Personification of the Fils

Kopp created the eight figures at the Schloßplatzspringbrunnen in Stuttgart, inaugurated in 1863 , which represent the personified rivers of Württemberg, also the Christ on the cross in the Frauenkirche in Esslingen am Neckar and the two attic figures "Justice and Law" of the justice building on Urbanstrasse in Stuttgart, which was completed in 1879 . In 1885 his portrait bust of Johann Jakob Moser , which was in a niche in the corner of the Moserstraße in Stuttgart, was unveiled, and in 1889 or 1883 (now lost) his Robert Mayer bust in front of the Stuttgart Polytechnic. He restored the representations of the Württemberg counts in the choir of the collegiate church . He also took care of figurative jewelry for the castle church in the old castle .

In addition to these works, he mainly created groups of figures that illustrated themes from ancient mythology, such as Hero and Leander, the Rape of Europa and Bacchus and Ariadne.
