Schloßplatz fountain

Northeastern Schloßplatz fountain

The two Schloßplatz fountains on Stuttgart's Schloßplatz were erected in honor of Wilhelm I of Württemberg .

The wells

The two fountains each consist of a round fountain basin, in the middle of which a goblet rises above a bowl, from which the water gushes up, then collects in the bowl and drains into the basin. The edge of the bowl is decorated with, among other things, plant motifs as well as an egg stick and lion heads, from whose mouths the water drains. The column that carries the goblet and the bowl is each surrounded by four figures symbolizing important rivers in Württemberg .

The original figures designed by Professor Karl Kopp (1825–1897) and Professor Christian Leins have been preserved near the southern Schloßplatzspringbrunnen . The putti represent Neckar , Kocher , Fils and Enz . They were made in the foundry of Wilhelm Pelargus in Stuttgart .

The original figures of the northern Schloßplatz fountain disappeared in 1945; the whereabouts could not be clarified. On the basis of photographs, the personifications of Donau , Nagold , Tauber and Jagst were reconstructed by Doris Schmauder and restored in Süßen in cast aluminum. This work was completed in 1989.

history

The two fountains were to be set up on the palace square on the occasion of the king's birthday on September 27, 1863. Technical problems had to be solved. For the water bowls manufactured in Wasseralfingen , special wagons had to be constructed for transport on the Remstalbahn . Pillars of the Remstal Bridge in Schwäbisch Gmünd that were too close together had to be demolished. In Stuttgart, one of the two flanking guard houses was demolished for the passage through the Königstor and rebuilt after the fountain bowls had passed. Despite these adversities, the two fountains could be put into operation on schedule.
