The Riehen Opera Festival is an annual opera staging in Riehen near Basel in late summer .

The Riehen Opera Festival took place for the first time in 2006. It takes place in the former riding arena of the Wenkenhof , which is located in the middle of an English garden . The visitors sit in the immediate vicinity of the stage, as there is no separation by an orchestra pit in the riding hall. The international soloists and musicians are supported by a regional choir and the Basel Festival Orchestra.

In 2008 the opera Il turco in Italia by the composer Gioacchino Rossini was performed. In 2010 the festival staged Bellini's opera Il pirata . In the late summer of 2011, the festival will have the Swiss premiere of Rossini's youth opera L'equivoco stravagante in an Italian version. Gioacchino Rossini composed this comic opera at the age of 18, which was premiered in autumn 1811 in the Teatro del Corso. The opera caused a real scandal and was canceled by the censors after only three performances because of "immoral content".

The festival director is the Dutchman Jan Schultsz . The festival co-founder and president is Martin Grossmann . The opera festival is organized by the St. Moritz Opera. This also directs the annual St. Moritz Opera Festival near St. Moritz .
