Tony Schumacher (born May 17, 1848 in Ludwigsburg as Antonie Louise Christiane Marie Sophie von Baur-Breitenfeld, † July 10, 1931 in Ludwigsburg) was a writer. Along with Thekla von Gumpert , Isabella Braun , Ottilie Wildermuth , Johanna Spyri and Agnes Sapper, she was one of the most renowned children's book authors of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Life

She was the seventh and youngest child of the Württemberg general, chief of the general staff and adjutant to the King of Württemberg Fidel von Baur-Breitenfeld , and his wife Karoline Friederike, née. Baroness von Kerner. She was born in the Grävenitz-Palais in Ludwigsburg, where she was also baptized.

The mother was the daughter of the Württemberg general Karl Friedrich Freiherr von Kerner , the niece of the doctor and critical chronicler of the French Revolution Johann Georg Kerner and also the niece of the doctor and famous romantic poet Justinus Kerner , the youngest of the very different brothers. In keeping with her distinguished background, Tony received private tuition and then attended a private “daughter institution”. She then led the life of a "house daughter", which was sometimes accompanied by a feeling of desolation and dissatisfaction (Rooschütz 1931, p. 15).

On October 5, 1875, Tony von Baur-Breitenfeld married the Privy Councilor Karl Friedrich Schumacher, 17 years his senior . The couple, who had no children, lived in Stuttgart, Olgastraße 33. The writer lived there until 1923.

Tony Schumacher, who was also a collector of mugs, cribs and dolls, did not begin to write until the age of 40. She is the author of more than 40 children's books, which were widely read up to the mid-20th century. Her children's books were emphatically educational, which should contribute to the development of a sense of duty, religious behavior and charity. Her children's books focus on orphaned, poor, lonely and sick children or children from foreign or aristocratic backgrounds. With her works for young people, the author had touched her social class with intensely moving topics (entertainment and instruction) (cf. Augustin 2002, p. 168 ff.)

In addition to her work as a writer, Tony Schumacher was also a draftsman. She had made hundreds of pencil drawings, especially in the early years of marriage, and many of them had watercolors.

In 1984 her story "Reserl am Hofe" was filmed, followed by "Cirkuskinder" (1986) and "Das Turmengele" (1986).

At the age of 75 the writer returned to her hometown. She took up quarters in a part of the building belonging to the "Gustav Werner Children's Hospital". Her care belonged to the sick children named Tony Schumacher Heimela . On the occasion of her 80th birthday, a street in Ludwigsburg was named after her.

Her grave is in the Pragfriedhof in Stuttgart .
