Christian Knapp , von Knapp from 1841 , (born February 3, 1800 in Hohenheim ; † May 21, 1861 in Stuttgart ) was Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Württemberg .

Life

Knapp was born as the eldest child of the Hohenheim economic administrator Jakob Christian Knapp (1752–1833) and his wife Regine Sophie Gottliebin Sandberger (1773–1805). His father later worked as a camera administrator in Leonberg . The father comes from a long line of forest officials who can be traced back to the progenitor Oseas Knapp, forest guard in Tübingen (1564-1626). The mother Gottliebin was the daughter of the Oberamtmann von Besigheim Konrad Friedrich Sandberger and Maria Rosine Essich. One of the mother's brothers is the chief bailiff Karl Ferdinand Sandberger . Christian von Knapp had three younger siblings, including Auguste, who married Friedrich Kausler and was Albrecht Erhardt's mother-in-law . Since his mother Gottliebin died very young, the father married again in 1807. From the father's second marriage to Johanne Griesinger (1776–1838), Knapp had five half-siblings. Knapp was an Evangelical Lutheran denomination.

Knapp grew up in Leonberg. He joined his father's office as a clerk and passed the administrative and financial exams there. As early as 1824, Knapp won a tender for the development of a suitable facility for accounting. In the following years, Knapp was first tax commissioner in Leonberg, then assistant to the finance chamber in Ludwigsburg, then employed as an auditor at the court domain chamber and, in 1830, finally court chamber administrator in Stammheim.

On November 23, 1830, Knapp married Luise Friederike Wilhelmine Hegelmaier (1807–1884) from Mähringen near Tübingen. Friederike Hegelmaier was the daughter of the pastor of Mähringen Christoph Friedrich Hegelmaier and his wife Katharine Müller. Hegelmaier was the granddaughter of the Tübingen theology professor Tobias Gottfried Hegelmaier (1730–1786) and the aunt of the botanist Christoph Friedrich Hegelmaier . Christian von Knapp had six children with his wife, but three of them died in the first year of life:

  1. Otto von Knapp (born December 5, 1831 in Stammheim; † May 25, 1896 in Cologne) was director of the state statistical office and the Württemberg railway administration and a member of the Reichstag. From his marriage to Marie Clemens he had four children.
  2. Ernst (born March 26, 1833 in Stammheim; † August 29, 1834 in Stammheim)
  3. Reinhold (born August 9, 1836 in Stammheim, † June 28, 1883 in Stuttgart) was Bergrat. From his marriage to Luise Staelin he had the son Alfred Knapp , who became Oberbergrat.
  4. Julie (born May 29, 1839 in Stuttgart, † August 30, 1839 in Stuttgart)
  5. Alfred (born August 29, 1841 in Stuttgart, † August 23, 1842 in Stuttgart)
  6. Fanny (born October 25, 1843 in Stuttgart; † April 17, 1923) married Ernst von Herzog (1834–1911), who was professor of philology at the University of Tübingen . One of their four children was Rudolf Herzog (1871–1953).

In 1838, Knapp joined the Ministry of Finance as a Ministerial assessor . In 1841 he received the staff nobility by being awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown . In 1844 he became chief finance officer of the railway commission. In this function he operated the expansion of the rail network.

On July 2, 1850, Knapp was appointed Minister of Finance. He held this office for eleven years until his death. He put the focus of his work on the development of railways, post and telegraphs in Württemberg. In addition, he carried out a tax reform and restructured the state finances.

Since 1855, Knapp suffered from poor health and in May 1861 fell ill with a nervous disorder, from which he finally died. He was buried in the Hoppenlauffriedhof . Due to its popularity among the people, a solemn funeral procession took place.
