Johannes Albrecht Erhardt (born April 3, 1819 in Stuttgart ; † October 1, 1897 there ) was a German ironworks engineer and Oberbergrat and a member of the board of directors of the Krupp company in Essen .

Life

Erhardt was born in Stuttgart as the third son of court cook Matthias Christoph Erhardt (1783–1854) and his wife Maria Rosine Dorn (1780–1845), daughter of a master carpenter. His paternal grandparents were the soldier Johannes Michael Erath (* 1722) and Christine Wursterin. Erhardt was a Catholic denomination.

Erhardt was initially a student at the Eberhard-Ludwigs Gymnasium . In order to realize his decision to become a miner and smelter, Erhardt switched to the Stuttgart trade school from the seventh grade onwards. Erhardt had to push through the change of school and his career aspiration against the will of his father, who wanted him to study theology. After initial difficulties, he developed into a very good student. After finishing school, he worked for two years as an assistant for chemistry and physics at the trade school. From 1838 to 1840 Erhardt was the controller of the silver and gold samples in the Stuttgart mint . Erhardt passed the first service examination in 1838 and the second service examination in the mining and smelting field in 1842. In 1840 Erhardt took up a position as assistant to Friedrich von Alberti in the Wilhelmshall salt works. From there he was transferred to Königsbronn as an assistant in 1843 . On the mandatory final trip of his training, Erhardt got to know the industrial plants of Franche-Comté , the Saar region, the Middle Rhine and the Siegerland .

On May 22, 1848 Erhardt married Bertha Henriette Luise Kausler (1829-1896) in Heidenheim an der Brenz . This was the daughter of Friedrich Kausler (1798–1874), senior bailiff in Heidenheim , and his wife Auguste Knapp (1801–1872), who was the sister of the Württemberg finance minister Christian von Knapp . The marriage resulted in two daughters and three sons: Ernestine Bertha (* 1849), who married Richard Johann Wilhelm Julius Lorenz in 1869, Marie Julie (* 1850), who in 1872 married the hut administration assistant Paul Hermann Mayer, the son of the Reichstag member Friedrich Eduard Mayer married Robert, who later became the smelting director in Munich , Eugen, who was the German consul in Bilbao , and another son whose name was not known.

Erhardt's own practical work began at the end of 1843 in assistant positions in the rival Württemberg ironworks in Königsbronn and Wasseralfingen . In 1847 the government appointed him smelter manager of Königsbronn. In 1853 he was given the management of the Wasseralfingen ironworks. Erhardt gave the plant a new structure by building a modern mechanical workshop, a puddling plant , a bar iron, a rail and a drum rolling mill. Erhardt rejected the construction of a steelworks, although the glamorous rise of the European steel industry did not leave him without an impression. During his time as a hut manager, Erhardt went on many study trips to England , Scotland , France and Belgium . He visited the world exhibitions several times. On his travels he got to know new methods of iron processing, which he then introduced in Wasseralfingen.

In autumn 1876 Erhardt decided to part with his creation and to go to Essen at the invitation of Alfred Krupp . On the occasion of his discharge from civil service, he was appointed Oberbergrat. At Krupp he then joined the management of the cast steel factory in Essen. In addition, he was responsible for technical operations, mines and smelting works and raw material procurement at Krupp until 1887.
