Kurt Ehrenreich Floericke (born March 23, 1869 in Zeitz ; † October 29, 1934 in Stuttgart ) was a German scientist, ornithologist and author of numerous popular scientific presentations. Other spellings are Curt instead of Kurt or Flöricke instead of Floericke .

biography

Kurt Floericke was born on March 23, 1869 in Zeitz. From 1889 he studied natural sciences in Breslau and Marburg . In 1893 he received his doctorate at the University of Marburg with the work Attempt an Avifauna in Silesia . In the same year Floericke founded the "Verein geschnügter Vogelfreunde" (VvV) in Rossitten on the Curonian Spit . The idea of setting up an ornithological station there came up for the first time in the circle of this association. After his first trips, which took him to Bosnia , Bulgaria , Cyprus , Asia Minor and Palestine , Floericke had his permanent residence in Rossitten from 1894 to spring 1897.

Johannes Thienemann first visited the Curonian Spit as early as 1896 . 1901 founded this on behalf of the Ornithological German Society in Rossitten a bird observatory and was also her first scientific director. Floericke then left Rossitten and undertook extensive research trips to Eastern and Southeastern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and South America in the following years.

In 1897/98 he was an assistant at the ornithological center in Budapest . In 1902 he settled in Vienna as a writer . His financial livelihood was secured when he joined the editorial team of KOSMOS magazine .

Floericke described in 1903 the new to science Buzzard subspecies ( Buteo buteo insularum ).

Floericke initiated the founding of the private Süddeutsche Vogelwarte eV (1928–1938) in Radolfzell on Lake Constance , the first inland ornithological in Germany, which took place on October 13, 1928 and whose scientific director he remained until 1931. In addition to his ornithological collection, which is now publicly accessible, with around 6500 bird skins and 4500 bird eggs, Floericke set up an observation and ringing station in the Scheffelschlösschen on the Mettnau .

As a freemason, he belonged to the humanitarian grand lodge "Freemasons' Association for the Rising Sun".

Floericke died of malaria that he contracted on his research trips. His grave in the Prague cemetery in Stuttgart still exists today.

Dedication names

Wilhelm Kobelt honored him in Euomphalia in 1898 ? floerickei , today a synonym for the leaf snail species Trichia erjaveci ( Brusina , 1870).
