The Süddeutsche Vogelwarte was a privately operated ornithological station in Radolfzell on Lake Constance .

In 1919, among others on the initiative of Dr. Kurt Floericke founded an association for the development of the Süddeutsche Vogelwarte eV. The association's magazine was called Mitteilungen über die Vogelwelt . The actual establishment of the South German Ornithological Institute took place on October 13, 1928 in Radolfzell. An observation station was set up in the local Scheffelschlösschen on the Mettnau peninsula . Johann Nikolaus von Bodman (1903–1988) was co-founder of the association and its chairman from 1931 to 1938 .

The Reich Nature Conservation Act of 1935 only provided for the maintenance of the three coastal bird observatories on Helgoland ( Helgoland bird observatory ), in Rossitten ( Rossitten bird observatory ) and on Hiddensee ( Hiddensee bird observatory ). They had the privilege of ringing birds. This deprived the South German Ornithological Institute of its livelihood and raison d'etre. For financial reasons, the only inland ornithological station in Germany at that time was closed again after only 10 years of existence.

The South German ornithological station should not be confused with today's Radolfzell ornithological station , which arose from the relocation of the Rossitten ornithological station to the Möggingen moated castle in Möggingen in 1945.
