The leaf snails (Hygromiidae) are a family (in some authors only subfamily) of the order of the land snails (Stylommatophora). There are around 50 species in Europe .

features

The cases are small to medium-sized, mostly less than 20 mm. Brownish colors predominate in the housing colors. The shell can be thin and hairy (e.g. Hygromiinae), but also relatively thick and smooth (e.g. heather snails ). The species shoot their love arrow or stab it, or it is inserted into the genital opening next to the penis. However, the mating behavior of many species is only poorly known.

Occurrence, way of life and distribution

The species of the family live e.g. Sometimes in moist forest areas, but also in dry, warm, open biotopes. They are distributed from the Azores and Canary Islands in the west across Europe and North Africa to Central Asia.

Systematics

The leaf snails are considered by some authors merely as a subfamily and placed in the family of the snail snail (Helicidae). Bouchet and Rocroi saw the group as a family and added five subfamilies with a total of nine tribes . The Helicellinae are now part of the Geomitridae family. According to the current system (2020), the breakdown of the family is as follows:
