Nicolas Gaucher

Nicolas Gaucher (born January 17, 1846 in Saricourt , † January 21, 1911 in Stuttgart ) was a French pomologist and tree nursery owner .

Life

Gaucher was born the son of a farmer and vine gardener in Saricourt in the Haute-Marne department in France. At the age of 13 he began an apprenticeship as a glove maker and then worked as a servant and waiter. From the age of 18 he learned to grow and grow fruit trees with Jamin in Bourg-la-Reine and Alphonse Du Breuil in Paris. In 1868 he got a job as an assistant in the botanical garden in Basel , where he gave his first lectures on fruit growing. In 1869 he went to Stuttgart as a tree nursery assistant, where he later became a partner in a tree nursery. In 1872 he founded his own fruit tree nursery, which became known for the quality of the trees it grew. In 1870 he opened a gardening school, where he trained more than 1,600 students over the years. Gaucher is considered to be the founder of shaped fruit growing in Germany.

He published several books, some of which were also translated into Russian. His work Practical Fruit Growing: Instructions for successful tree care and fruit cultivation for professional gardeners and enthusiasts was supplemented by country-specific topics by several Russian authors.
