Ernst Gessler

Ernst Geßler , from 1859 von Geßler (born October 27, 1818 in Ellwangen (Jagst) , † December 12, 1884 in Stuttgart ) was Württemberg government councilor and from 1864 to 1870 Minister of the Interior of the Kingdom of Württemberg .

Professional career

After attending grammar school in Ellwangen, Gessler became a court actuary in Mergentheim in 1843 . He was promoted to Government Assessor in 1845 and Ministerial Assessor in 1846. As a councilor in the Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, he was involved in the riots during the March Revolution in Heilbronn in 1848 and in the Baden uprising in 1849. In 1850 he was appointed Ministerialrat. From 1863 to 1877 Gessler was a full member of the Privy Council . From September 21, 1864 to March 23, 1870 he was the Württemberg Minister of the Interior during the reign of the Varnbuler Ministry. Until 1884 Gessler was a councilor at the Württemberg Administrative Court. In addition, he was appointed lifelong member of the Württemberg First Chamber since 1861 .

family

Gessler had six siblings. His brother Theodor Geßler was Chancellor of the University of Tübingen and Württemberg Minister of Education (1870–1885). Geßler was married twice and had four children from his first marriage. His son Wilhelm Geßler was Württemberg's finance minister from 1908 to 1914.

Honors

In 1859 Geßler was awarded the commentary cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which was associated with the personal title of nobility. He also received the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick in 1865 .
