Wilhelm von Gessler

Friedrich Wilhelm (von) Gessler (born October 11, 1850 in Stuttgart ; † January 12, 1925 there ) was a Württemberg administrative officer and finance minister.

Life and politics

After attending grammar school in Stuttgart , Gessler completed a law degree at the University of Tübingen from 1868 to 1873 and joined the Germania fraternity in 1868 . In 1877 he entered the administrative service in Württemberg. From 1880 he was a member of the government council in the department of finance. After working in various government organizations and insurance companies in leading positions, he became Ministerial Director in 1900 and President of the Royal Württemberg Court Domain Chamber in 1904 . From April 8, 1908 to April 24, 1914, he headed the Department of Finance as Minister of State. From 1914 to 1919 he was again President of the Hofdomänenkammer and retired in the summer of 1919.

Since December 15, 1899, Gessler was appointed for life member in the chamber of the class lords . In 1908, when he began his work as finance minister, he resigned this mandate, but was again legitimized for the First Chamber in 1916 and belonged to it again until the November Revolution.

From 1895 to 1907 Gessler was President of the Württemberg State Organization of the Red Cross.

Family background

Wilhelm's father Ernst von Geßler (* 1821; † 1884) was the Württemberg Minister of the Interior from 1864 to 1870. His first wife was named Friederike geb. Gaup (* 1824; † 1855) and had three other children in addition to her son Wilhelm. One of Wilhelm Gessler's uncle was the lawyer and politician Theodor von Gessler . Another uncle was the member of the Reichstag, Friedrich Ludwig Adolf von Gaupp (* 1832, † 1901). Wilhelm von Gessler was married and had several children, including Gerhard Gessler (* 1886; † 1985), who was a board member at Württembergische Hypothekenbank AG in Stuttgart. Gessler belonged to the Protestant Church .
