Johann Georg Sigwart (born October 16, 1554 in Winnenden , † October 5, 1618 in Tübingen ) was a professor of theology and rector of the University of Tübingen.

Life

Sigwart was the son of the mayor of Winnenden Michael Sigwart (1507 - February 3, 1563) and his wife Magaretha Grienenberger. He attended the local Latin school together with Aegidius Hunnius the Elder , after passing his exams in Stuttgart in 1570, he switched to the convent school in Lorch in 1571, went to the convent school in Adelberg in 1574 and passed the entrance examination for the University of Tübingen in 1575 despite serious illnesses. In 1576 he became a baccalaureate there and in 1578 acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. He then took up a theological degree with Jakob Andreae , Jacob Heerbrand and (Theodor) Dietrich Schnepf (1525–1586).

In 1584 he became a deacon and after the death of Schnepf pastor there. At the same time he was given the professorship of theology in 1587, which he held for 31 years. Half a year before he died, he had been given the job of church dean in place of his pastoral office. He was dean of the theological faculty several times and also headed the rectorate of the alma mater several times.

From his marriage to Magarethe, the daughter of the professor of law Jacob Kappelbeck (1506–1586), in 1585 , eleven sons and six daughters emerged. Five sons and three daughters survived the father.

A large number of printed works and many sermons have been preserved. One of the most cited is an analysis of the similarities and differences between the theology of Martin Luther and Calvin (Tübingen 1614, 750 pages). His portrait hangs in the Senate room of the Tübingen Castle. His body was buried on October 8, 1618 in the collegiate church of St. Georg in Tübingen.
