Ferdinand Gottlieb Gmelin , from 1823 von Gmelin , (also Gottlob ; born March 10, 1782 in Tübingen , Duchy of Württemberg ; † December 21, 1848 in Tübingen, Kingdom of Württemberg ) was a German physician , natural historian , chemist and explorer.

Life

Ferdinand Gottlieb von Gmelin, nephew of Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin , studied in Tübingen, earned his doctorate in medicine in 1802 and appointed professor of natural history and medicine in Tübingen in 1805. In 1810 he was promoted to full professor. For 38 years Gmelin was a professor at the Eberhard Karls University . He held this office until his death in 1848.

In 1823 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown .
