Hermann Schneider (Germanist)

Hermann Schneider (born August 12, 1886 in Zweibrücken , † April 9, 1961 in Tübingen ) was a German Germanic and Scandinavian Medievalist . He was rector and professor at the University of Tübingen .

Life

Hermann Schneider attended the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich from 1895 to 1904 . From 1904 to 1905 Schneider studied German literature and philosophy under Friedrich von der Leyen , Friedrich Munckler and Hermann Paul at the University of Munich . From 1906 to 1910 he studied German and Romance philology at the University of Berlin with Andreas Heusler , Richard Moritz Meyer , Wilhelm Scherer , Erich Schmidt and Wolfgang Schulze . He received his doctorate under Erich Schmidt in 1910 and passed the examination for the higher teaching post. After the successful habilitation in 1912 he became a private lecturer and received an extraordinary professorship at the University of Bonn in 1914 and at the Berlin University in 1915. In 1921 he was appointed full professor for German language and literature at the University of Tübingen . There he became the first post-war rector in 1945. In 1954 he retired.

Schneider was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the Modern Language Association and Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg .
