Markus Daum (born June 20, 1959 in Bad Säckingen ) is a German sculptor and graphic artist . He lives and works in Radolfzell on Lake Constance and in Berlin .

Life

He spent his school days in Radolfzell on Lake Constance. After an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor from 1979 to 1981 in Ravensburg , he did his community service as a paramedic with the German Red Cross. In 1983 he began studying sculpture with Alfred Hrdlicka at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . In 1986 he moved to the Berlin University of the Arts , where he completed his studies in 1990 as a master student of Rolf Szymanski . In 1992 he received the Villa Serpentara scholarship from the Berlin Academy of the Arts in Olevano Romano, Italy, in 2017 a scholarship from the Bartels Foundation in Basel , Switzerland and in 2017/18 a working scholarship from the Trustee Program EHF 2010 of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation , Berlin . In 2012 he was awarded the Konstanz Art Prize. Markus Daum is a member of the Künstlerbund Baden-Württemberg , the Neue Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft and the sculpture Network.

The focus of the artistic question of the sculptor and draftsman Markus Daum is always the image of the human being. Again and again he circles human existence with its light and dark sides. The frightening, the latent danger of violence and injury is not spared. The emotional level of people is captured in his works in a touching way. For Markus Daum, working in cycles is not a purely technical matter.

For Daum, the cycle of growth and decay, which the artist has been dealing with for decades, dissolves in the cycle. This becomes clear in his examination of the human body, which he depicts both sculpturally and graphically.

The artist finds his own archaic form of representation of the physical for his sculptures. He gives the ancient theme of the figure a contemporary form. He works with great freedom of individual design, exploring the human horizon. Markus Daum implements the consistent multiple view of the sculptural works in his graphic work - etchings, ink, graphite and oil pastel drawings as well as collages - by constantly reworking the individual sheets.

In the last few years, the language of forms between his graphic lattice heads on paper and the filigree wire sculptures of busts and heads have indicated ever larger connections.
