Preliminary remark

Light sculpture on the Wartberg tower

In Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg there are a large number of sculptures in public spaces. The city sees itself as a traditional sculpture city because of the 500-year-old architectural decorations of the Kilian's Church , the Heilbronn town hall and various historical fountains, whose art is an expression of bourgeois self-image. Since 1977, the municipal museums have focused on the subject of “sculpture in public spaces”, and several larger exhibitions and projects have taken place in Heilbronn that dealt with sculptural works, for example. a. the year of sculptures 1978 proclaimed by the art association , the sculpture avenue and the sculpture symposium organized by Mechthild Bauer-Babel for the state horticultural show in 1985 or the sculpture city in 1996, many of which have remained in Heilbronn. Following the motto of the 1996 exhibition, the works will continue to be presented under the motto of the City of Sculpture Heilbronn . Most of the more than 80 permanent works are located in the city center, but a larger number can also be found on the Wein-Panorama-Weg on the Wartberg and on the former garden show site in Wertwiesenpark . The light sculpture Sonnenstrahl for Heilbronn by the Dutch artist Jan van Munster has been visible from afar on the Wartberg Tower. It shines in the city colors, white during the day and red and blue at night.

  • The peace stele (1984) made of welded Corten steel strips, manufactured by Erwin Wortelkamp, stands in the city garden at the Harmonie concert and congress center . An inscription on the base of the stele quotes a poem by Volker von Törner: "I can grasp the incomprehensible with my hands, doggedly in the blue of the sky I take root in the wind." The stele is 8.90 m high and used to stand between the avenue and of harmony. After its renovation in 2001, the stele was moved to the city garden. Across from the Stadtgarten, in front of the former state central bank building on Moltkestrasse, is the sculpture 12/88 (1988) by Erich Hauser made of stainless steel, which is over eight meters high . Also in Moltkestrasse is the 1.45 meter high bronze figure of Saint Florian by Jakob Wilhelm Fehrle (1950).
  • In the city garden there are also the bronze cranes by Hermann Koziol (1959), who in 1962 also created the goose fountain , which was originally set up on the avenue, now in Schöntaler Gasse . The same artist also created Das Leben im Haus on the facade of the former Gewo administration building on Paulinenstrasse, as well as the statue of a girl with a fish that adorns the staircase of the two-storey west wing in Heilbronn Central Station .
Christophorus by Jürgen Goertz at Kilian's Church
  • The massive, 3.40 m high and 5.5 m deep metal-marble sculpture Christophorus by Jürgen Goertz (1988) is placed over the steps of the south portal of the Kilian's Church.
  • When meat house are in the Kirchbrunnen Street Floor Pieces (1991/93) by Bettina Bürkle installed. The seven cast iron parts, which were conceived 1991–93 and cast in 1998, resemble gigantic fossils and point to the former use of the meat store as a natural history museum. Not far from there is the bronze Käthchen by Dieter Läpple from 1965 , which was once the figure of the Käthchenbrunnen .
  • In the extension of Kirchbrunnenstrasse you can find the stone sculpture Gate locked from Bentheim sandstone by Michael Schoenholtz (1989). The artist had created it for the newly designed Kiliansplatz in 1987/88, where it stood for a while until it was moved to its current location, where the former main traffic axis pierced the city wall and reached the banks of the Neckar.
  • In front of the Haus der Stadtgeschichte at Eichgasse 1, a 2.75 meter high Staufer column was inaugurated by Markus Wolf on March 1, 2014 .
Above the abyss of Hubertus von der Goltz on the Götzenturm
  • Daniel Wagenblast's Taxidriver 98 (2000) stands by the Götzenturm , and Hubertus von der Goltz's sculpture Above the Abyss (1985) is mounted on the tower itself . In the Deutschhof you can find the large Pfanem by Dietrich Klinge from 1999. There is also the partially glazed large pottery under the sickle of the moon by ceramist Lee Babel from 1990, reminiscent of a gate . In the walled courtyard at the back of the building is a Another work by the same artist can be seen, also on the corner of Wartbergstrasse and Safe Street.
Bridgeheads by Franz Bernhard (sculptor)
  • On both sides of the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke in 1997 and 2001 the five-meter high bridgeheads were erected by Franz Bernhard made of COR-TEN steel . On the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke is the successful hare (golden hare) (2007) by Heinrich Brummack : an upright gold-plated hare fishes from a red pedestal.
  • On the pale island spanned by the bridge, there are several contemporary steel sculptures in front of the Rieker Gallery and the bronze swimmer by Waldemar Grzimek (1959) in front of the Insel-Hotel. The raftsman of the Stuttgart sculptor Karl Calwer from 1930, which he designed for the Stuttgart Waterways and Shipping Directorate, has also been on Bleach Island since 1960 . Rafting in Heilbronn was equally important and difficult. Due to the impassable waterways and the many mill wheels, the raft trip was almost impossible for a long time. It was not until the 15th century that the Floßgasse was built between Bleichinsel and Hefenweiler to create an unobstructed route on the Neckar.
Fleiner Tor by Erwin Wortelkamp
  • Across from Heilbronn main station is the sculpture Konvex / Konkav by Renate Hoffleit made of bronze and granite (1989/93). The work is the second of three casts from a bronze sculpture originally created for the Hakome Open Air Museum in Japan.
  • In front of the former telecommunications office on the Sonnenberg is the steel and plexiglass sculpture with satellites (1986) by Gottfried Gruner . The object belongs to Gruner's late work phase, in which he dealt with transparent and movable abstract objects. Works from earlier work phases can be seen in other locations in Heilbronn.
  • The steel sculpture Fleiner Tor at the administrative center at the Wollhaus comes from Erwin Wortelkamp . The two-part work is probably the largest sculpture in Heilbronn: a seven-meter-high object, roughly welded together from plates, leans against a building, in front of it lies another twelve-meter-long, pointed object that is made using the same technique. Between the two parts of the sculpture, one enters the courtyard of the administrative center, in which the two administrative armchairs (1983) by Ingeborg Schäffler-Wolf sit on stepped concrete plinths. They are angular and block-like structures formed from yew hedges, which are reminiscent of medieval rulers' thrones in terms of their placement and shape. The Obersulm textile artist has also designed a silk tapestry inside the administrative center.
  • Before the new main post office in Bahnhofstrasse 12 the sculpture was in the years 1990 to 2017 of mail from Ernst Günter Herrmann . The work, made of two dark granite slabs, was 2.80 meters high, 4.50 meters deep and stood in a 13 m long marble rail. The two granite slabs sat like "oversized butterfly wings on long marble plinths". The work of art belonged to Deutsche Post AG, but was included in the city's catalog of sculptures because of its size and its placement in public spaces. A few years ago the sculpture, including the neighboring post office building, was acquired privately. For reasons of traffic safety, the sculpture mail item was removed in March 2017 and was brought to the company premises in Leingarten. Since then, the sculpture Torso by Güglingen's sculptor Gunther Stilling has been in its place . Stilling's sculpture Torso has been at the Volksbank since 2014.
Berlin Bear by Ernst Kibler
  • From 1981 to January 27, 2011, the Berlin Bear by Ernst Kibler (November 9, 1901 in Stuttgart; † 1976), once part of the Bear Fountain that was inaugurated on May 13, 1960, stood on the median of the avenue near the theater . Ernst Kibler was born as the youngest son of Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Kibler (1871–1937) and Hedwig Zeller (1870–1836) and studied at the art academy in Stuttgart and in Berlin under the sculptor Georg Kolbe (1877–1947). He was married to Luba Herschensohn (1898–1946) and lived in Stuttgart. His work was influenced by Ernst Barlach (1870–1938). After that, the figure was in the city nursery on the Böllinger Höfe (as of April 2016). Wilfried Hajek "to put it a bit flippantly: He is still in hibernation, probably until April". The figure is supposed to return to Berliner Platz, but according to Hajek, “his fangs would have to be pulled out beforehand so that he no longer looks so tortured and grumpy”. On Wednesday, December 21, 2016, the figure was placed on Heilbronner Berliner Platz in front of the Heilbronner Stadttheater . Museum director Marc Gundel described the figure as "our problem bear".
  • Not far from the theater hangs Intervention P (1994) by Christian Hasucha on Weinsberger Straße . It is a metal platform 40 centimeters in diameter attached to a traffic sign at a height of 15 centimeters above street level and the last remnant of an art series carried out by Hasucha between 1990 and 1994 in Heilbronn, Cologne and Graz.
  • The bronze figure Jüngling (1958) by Gottfried Gruner is in front of the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium on Gymnasiumstrasse . This figure, also known as Schlotterle , belongs to Gruner's early work phase, in which he preferred figurative representations. In 1957, the same artist also created the concrete cast runner in the courtyard of the Mönchsee-Gymnasium and the sculptures for the entrance hall of the Heilbronn Business School Handel - Heilbronn und die Welt , which depict a Chinese water carrier, a wagon puller and Chinese characters in linden wood.
Heilbronn capital by Thomas Lenk at the police headquarters
Sculpture by Gunther Stilling on the parking garage of the district administration
  • The Heilbronn capital (1977) by Thomas Lenk is placed between the police department and the tax office . The 8.60 meter high sculpture consists of square concrete slabs with rounded corners, which are stacked by centrifugal offset to form a bundle of four parallel columns in the lower part, each of which protrudes above the outer edge.
  • Is that of before the District Office Karl-Henning Seemann designed two-figure group (1978/79), the two life-size bronze figures are to symbolize the dialogue between authorities and citizens. In 2012, the car park facade of the District Office was provided with an 85-meter-long sculpture made of stainless steel pipes by Gunther Stilling .
  • Another work by Karl-Henning Seemann has been placed in front of the Villa Faißt on Cäcilienstraße, the bronze sculpture Turning Girl . After it was acquired by the city in October 1978, this sculpture was for many years in front of the entrance to the City Museum in Eichgasse.
  • In front of the Kreissparkasse Heilbronn stands a larger-than-life woman in painted bronze , taking off her mask (1996) by Joachim Schmettau . The facade of the Kreissparkasse building is decorated with four meter high rafts by the Stuttgart artist Rosalie from 2006.

Wine panorama path

Stein 2000 by Ralf Krämer

There are numerous other sculptures on the Wein-Panorama-Weg , which runs along the Wartberg . The Jurakalk sculpture Stein 2000 by Ralf Krämer (2000) is located directly in front of the Wartbergturm, in the immediate vicinity of which there is also the 2.55 meter high metal work Large Seated Female Torso by Lothar Fischer (1978–84), the sculpture consisting of two curb stones Corpus, Arm by Michael Schoenholtz (1988) and the sculpture made of Belgian granite Cosmic XVII by Ottmar Mohring (1977/78) are displayed. Along the way there are other works, including a preliminary study made in red sandstone from 1983 for the black courtiers sculpture by Dieter E. Klumpp , erected in 1986 in the Böckingen district of Heilbronn , the Madonna of Berlin (1987/88) made of bronze and iron by Markus Daum , the bronze figure Great Threatened (1970) by Waldemar Grzimek , the great reclining figure (around 1980) made of Ruhpolding marble by Susanne Knorr and the metal sculpture Labora (2002) by Werner Stepanek .

The bronze barrel carrier from 1982 by Karl-Henning Seemann below the Wartberg restaurant was once installed as a barrel carrier fountain in downtown Heilbronn.

The sculptures Large Threatened and Barrel Carrier were allegedly sawn off and stolen by metal thieves at their locations on the Wein-Panorama-Weg near the ground and stolen.

Parks

Romea and Julio by Rolf Bodenseh in Wertwiesenpark
  • In Wertwiesenpark , the venue for the Baden-Württemberg State Horticultural Show 1985, there are several sculptures, including a stone sculpture by Ottmar Mohring , Cosmic Connection I (1985). The steel sculpture Heilbronner Stück (1985) by Bernd Hennig refers to the hilly landscape of the park with steel strips embedded in the ground, some of which run in opposite directions. The work Turm (1985) by Jo Schöpfer was created during the sculpture symposium for the State Garden Show from local Heilbronn sandstone , as was the stone sculpture from two obelisks Romea and Julio (1985) by Rolf Bodenseh . The park, which was already within the boundaries of the Heilbronn district of Sontheim , was the end of the approximately two-kilometer-long sculpture avenue , which led along 74 sculptures from Heilbronn city center to the garden exhibition area.
  • In the Pfühlpark , which was developed into a local recreation area between 1909 and 1936, there is a sandstone column with a stone faun figure from the time before 1900, which was donated by the city privately during the establishment of the site. Column and faun were probably created separately and only came together when the park was laid out; the artist is unknown. The Two Musicians by Wernher Eberbach (1926), who initially stood in the city garden in the late 1920s, have also been in the Pfühlpark since the late 1950s .

Gesundbrunnen Clinic

  • In front of the entrance to the Klinikum am Gesundbrunnen in Heilbronn's Neckargartach district, there are three life-size bronze sculptures that were previously on view in the city center for a while: Adam by Richard Heß (1973), mother and child by Sabina Grzimek (1981) and man with a mask by Wolfgang Mattheuer (1983).

Heilbronn University

  • The bronze sculpture Dialog (1966) by Max Seiz , a long-time member of the Stuttgart Secession, stands in front of the Heilbronn University . It shows three larger than life young people talking to one another. They stand over a base that illustrates the Pythagorean theorem in a checkerboard pattern using the right triangle to form the simplest Pythagorean triple. The interior courtyard design with the fountain sculpture (1983/84) made of concrete, stainless steel and Plexiglas is by Paul Reich , the relief sculpture (1967) at the main entrance is a bronze work by Hanspeter Fitz .

More sculptures

Phallocaust III by Franz Gutmann, in 2006 still at the Götzenturm

According to Sculpture City Heilbronn , a guide to art in public space from 1996, there are supposed to be other sculptures in Heilbronn, but they could not be verified because they are no longer in their original locations or on private property, although they are in the catalog of Public art was recorded. The city of Heilbronn acquired the work of art created in 1984/85 in 1996, initially installed it in the Deutschhof and later relocated it to its longstanding location. In April 2010, the property was moved to the municipal dairy farm due to continued decay due to fungal attack.
