The Wartberg restaurant is located on the Wartberg in Heilbronn in the immediate vicinity of the Wartberg tower . The origins of the restaurant go back to 1760 in the wine and beer tavern of the then tower keeper . The city of Heilbronn had a first permanent restaurant built on the mountain in 1792. The current building was built in 1846 in the classicism style and was given its present shape through a renovation in 1982/83.

history

In 1759 Philipp Jakob Nast (1726–1805) became the tower keeper of the Wartberg tower, which had existed since the 12th century . Nast was the son of the Baden-Durlach mouth cook Johann Ludwig Nast, whose widow had married the Heilbronn butcher and innkeeper Jakob Alexander Sartorius († 1752) in 1735. Philipp Jakob Nast took over Sartorius' guest hostel Lamm in Heilbronn in 1750 , but sold it in 1758 and then applied for the vacant position as a tower guard, which he was awarded on June 30, 1759. In addition to his actual work as a tower keeper, his duties also included overseeing the Riedwald. Soon after starting work, Nast began serving wine and beer to visitors. At around the same time, the town hunter Simon Hager started a bar in the nearby hunter's house , as Nast and Hager were summoned to the Heilbronn City Council in 1761 to clarify the tax aspect.

Nast built a hut on the Wartberg with his own resources, in which he ran his bar and where dance events took place. The hut was badly damaged in a storm in 1778 and repaired by the city of Heilbronn with half of the repair costs. In the 1780s the hut was mostly managed by Nast's wife, while Nast himself traveled for a long time with trained animals. In 1786 the council briefly considered setting up a salon on the Wartberg, but rejected the plans again. From 1787 Philipp Jakob Nast was back on the Wartberg and had his trained animals there in addition to the bar. A council minutes from 1787 named a stag and a horse, Justinus Kerner named an American hippopotamus in his memories of his youth for the year 1797.

After Nast's hut was completely destroyed by another storm, the council approved in September 1791 one of two submitted construction plans for the construction of a permanent restaurant with a dance hall, which was built in 1792. Philipp Jakob Nast was initially allowed to manage the property free of charge, but later he had to carry out the repairs. In 1796, his son August Dietrich Nast is a restaurant owner on the Wartberg. His nephew Karl Nast is named as tenant of the Wartberg in 1843.

The old restaurant building burned down in 1844. The current building was rebuilt in 1846 in the classicism style. The restaurant was badly damaged during the battle for Heilbronn in 1945 and was later repaired. In 1982/83 the building was extensively renovated, with a large, terraced dining room in the southwest of the building and a single-storey commercial building in the north. Another renovation took place from May to July 2004.

The classicist facade with arched windows and arcades has been preserved to this day, although the numerous alterations and additions that the building and the surrounding open spaces have undergone have left many traces of newer styles.
