Lee Babel (born September 14, 1940 in Heilbronn ) is a German ceramist .

Life

Lee Babel was a student of Walburga Külz (1921–2002) from 1957 to 1960 , studied at the Berlin Art Academy from 1960 and founded her own workshop in Heilbronn in 1962, where she also organized exhibitions in the gallery. As early as the 1960s she took part in international events, in 1967 in a symposium in the CSSR, in 1969 she was involved in setting up a school of arts and crafts in Nairobi , and in 1978 in the ceramists symposium in Bassano del Grappa. Since 1970 she has been creating free ceramic sculptures and wall designs, and since 1975 also accessible sculptures. Her ceramic works are composed of basic geometric figures such as lines, circles and squares and are given a composed internal structure of relief and color. Her work has been on view nationally and internationally for several decades.

In 1981, in her hometown of Heilbronn, she was one of the initiators of the multi-week show Das Haus in der Kunst with architectural sculptures on streets and squares. Several of her large ceramics can be found in public spaces in Heilbronn, including the work Under the Sickle of the Moon from 1990 in the Deutschhof and another work on the corner of Wartbergstrasse and Safe Street.

Babel lives temporarily in Italy, where she has been making ceramics in the Fara Vicentica workshop since 1979 . She works with the Italian ceramist Alessio Tasca , with whom she acquired some of the ceramics awarded the Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 for the Museo Civico della Ceramica in Nove / Italy and presented them outside of Italy, including in Mindelheim and Memmingen. In 2003 Babel and Tasca were the subject of an exhibition in the Marburg University Museum in the castle, where an exhibition was previously dedicated to Walburga Külz, and in 2004 in the art collections of the Veste Coburg.

In 2006, a donation was made in Heilbronn by Sparkassenstiftung, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke , Stadtwerke Heilbronn , Heilbronnerversorgung GmbH and the Paul and Anna Göbel Foundation totaling 10,000 euros to document the artist's life's work.
