VISCII

VISCII ( Vietnamese Standard Code for Information Interchange ) is an 8-bit character encoding and is described in RFC 1456 . It covers the spelling of the Vietnamese language .

Since this orthography uses a total of 134 characters in addition to the ASCII characters, a simple extension of the ASCII character set to 8-bit is not possible. VISCII solves this problem by replacing the six rarest control characters in the ASCII area with the six rarest Vietnamese characters. Although this method can be used to encode the language itself, there is no room for additional punctuation or currency symbols.

Today the character set has been replaced by UTF-8 .
