Life

Franz Gutmann attended the Friedrich-Gymnasium Freiburg and then studied Catholic theology for two semesters at the University of Freiburg in 1950/51 , but then began studying at the Freiburg Art Academy with Wilhelm Gerstel after interning with a wood sculptor . After three semesters he switched to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he became a master student of Ewald Mataré . The friendships with Joseph Beuys and Erwin Heerich also date from this time .

In 1956, a grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia enabled him to travel to Central Africa for a year . On this trip he also spent five months with Albert Schweitzer in Lambaréné .

“I was born in 1928 in the Münstertal, Black Forest. My father showed me how to sharpen an ax. Since then I haven't learned anything more important. "

Gutmann works with almost all materials (stone, wood, metal, ...), his works range from religious art to large public sculptures and fountains to the design of medals and plaques.

His sometimes quite monumental works can have a very cheerful character, such as the large cast concrete sculpture Two Giants - Schlucker and Spucker under the light rail bridge in the Stühlinger Kirchpark in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Above all, his religious works can also provoke, such as the choir sculpture of the crucified in the university church in Freiburg. For the art and church project , he created the giant wooden penis Phallocaust III in 1984/85 , which was finally installed in Heilbronn from 1995 to 2010 after stints in the Bad Krozingen spa gardens, Saarbrücken and Heidelberg. His redesign of the front choir in Freiburg Minster from 2006 also sparked heated discussions .
