Epitaph for Johannes Kerer

The Catholic University Church (formerly the Jesuit Church ) in the center of Freiburg is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary . Its construction is based on the Solothurn Jesuit Church . The church is often used for concerts because of its organ and acoustics . 56 friars, including professors from the university, rest in the crypt under the church.

history

From 1683 to 1701, the Jesuit friar Heinrich Mayer built a church for the Jesuit college , which was completed at the beginning of the 18th century. After the Jesuit order was abolished in 1773, the church was transferred to the University of Freiburg in 1793 . On October 21, 1827, the first Freiburg archbishop Bernhard Boll was consecrated in the university church.

During the air raid on Freiburg on November 27, 1944, Operation Tigerfish , the vaults collapsed and the entire interior, including the floor-to-ceiling baroque altar front, was lost in the fire. In 1956/57 the church was led by Horst Linde and Hans Rolli rebuilt . The destroyed vaults were rebuilt with reinforced concrete, remaining remains of the old church were restored as much as possible, but in the choir only the pillars and entablature pieces that give the basilica its structure were rebuilt. During a restoration in 1978, the University Building Department endeavored to return the church to its original state with white stucco and dark beams. The bell tower with onion dome above the choir cannot be seen due to the narrow buildings in the vicinity of the church.

Works of art

In the strongly structured facade are the figures of Aloysius and Stanislaus Kostka , two Jesuit saints. On the left in the choir is the epitaph of Johannes Kerer . Johannes Kerer was professor and rector of the University of Freiburg and then auxiliary bishop in Augsburg until his death in 1507 . The epitaph is the oldest relief owned by the university.

In one of the right side chapels stands the statue of the Virgin Mary made from alder wood by Otto Herbert Hajek . It was installed there in 1957.

In 1988 the figure of Jesus, on loan from the artist Franz Gutmann , was hung on a steel beam in the choir room . The figure of Jesus is carved from an oak trunk and is 5.65 m high. It was deliberately attached to a 16 m long steel beam and not to a cross. This steel girder is supposed to represent the connection between earth and sky, the three gold plates at the upper end also serve for this purpose, which mean the divine light

organ

The organ was built in 1958 by Willy Dold from Freiburg and re- voiced by the Freiburg Orgelbau Späth in 2004 . The organ has 36 registers on three manuals and pedal and 2682 pipes .
