Rainer Warland

Rainer Warland (born September 8, 1951 in Sarstedt ) is a German Christian archaeologist and Byzantine art historian.

Rainer Warland completed a double degree in Catholic Theology and Christian Archeology , Art History and Classical Archeology at the University of Freiburg . In 1978 he obtained his theological diploma with a thesis on the veneration of relics at Victricius of Rouen . From 1978 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the Freiburg Chair for Christian Archeology. In 1985, Walter Nikolaus Schumacher received his doctorate in Christian archeology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg on the late antique bust of Christ.

From 1988 to 1994 he was Professor of Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History at the University of Göttingen . In 1994/1995 he was a professor for archeology and art history of the Christian Orient at the University of Halle . Since the summer semester 1995 he has held the chair for Christian archeology and art history at the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg. In 2008 this professorship was transferred to the newly created Institute for Archaeological Sciences of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg. He retired at the end of the 2015/2016 winter semester.

His research on painting, sculpture and iconography applies equally to late antiquity and Byzantium . In the area of ​​late antiquity, he has published on models of early Christian sarcophagi, private representation in the mosaics of Centcelles (Spain), the narrative concept of early Byzantine sculpture and late ancient book illumination. His Byzantium research focuses on Central Byzantine Cappadocia , its settlement topography and wall painting. In addition, he publishes on basic questions of Christian art and participated in art commissions and judges.

From 2001 to 2011 he was deputy chairman of the German Working Group for Byzantine Studies.
