Georg Weise (art historian)

Georg Weise (born February 26, 1888 in Frankfurt am Main , † January 31, 1978 in Sorrento ) was a German art historian who specialized in Spain in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Life

Weise studied history at the University of Tübingen , among others with Johannes Haller . He completed his habilitation in Tübingen in 1914, became an associate professor there in 1920 and a full professor in 1921 as full professor of art and intellectual history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and successor to Konrad von Lange . In 1932, Weise publicly opposed a lecture by Paul Schultze-Naumburg in Tübingen, which was held on behalf of the Kampfbund für deutsche Kultur . That is why he was temporarily suspended from duty in 1933, but was able to continue his work as a full professor during the Nazi era without becoming a member of the NSDAP . During this time he devoted himself particularly to the Swabian fine arts, especially the Swabian Baroque. In 1954 Georg Weise retired .

During the First World War he undertook excavations in Quierzy and Samoussy , which at that time were only a few kilometers behind the front line. The excavations in Quierzy took place from August 1916 and had to be abandoned in February 1917, when the terrain was left to the French to straighten the front; then he continued his work in Samoussy. During both excavations he found relics of medieval castles, which he identified as the royal palaces of the Carolingians . Although the results of his investigations, which were hastily carried out due to the war, remained controversial, no new excavations have been carried out in these places since then.

From the early 1920s he devoted himself to documenting medieval architecture and sculpture in Germany, France, Spain and Switzerland , which he captured in around 7,000 photographs. The work in Spain in particular is of inestimable value today, as many of the works of art that he captured with around 2500 photos were destroyed a few years later in the Spanish Civil War. The large-format photographs he made were taken over by the German Documentation Center for Art History at the University of Marburg in 1948 and 1969, respectively.

Another part of his photographs is housed in the Georg Weise archive of the Art History Institute of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . Today it is part of the photo collection that is organized in the Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT .

Wise's students include Gertrud Otto and Ingrid Kreuzer .
