Nicholas John Conard (born July 23, 1961 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American-German prehistoric archaeologist , who became known for the discovery of the world's oldest art in the caves of the Swabian Alb ( Venus vom Hohlen Fels ).

life and work

Conard studied in 1980, 1981 and 1983 at the University of Rochester , New York, where he received a Bachelor of Arts with highest distinction in anthropology and chemistry in 1983 . In 1982 he studied ethnology and chemistry at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg and between 1984 and 1989 Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Cologne . From 1985 to 1986 he carried out interdisciplinary studies in physics , geology and anthropology at the University of Rochester, where he obtained his Master of Science degree in 1986 . From 1987 to 1990 Conard studied at Yale University , New Haven (Connecticut), where he received his Master of Philosophy in 1988 and the Doctor of Philosophy in 1990 .

From 1991 to 1993, Conard was an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut . He has been a professor since 1995 and is now director of the Department of Ancient Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology at the Institute for Prehistory and Early History and Archeology of the Middle Ages at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and headed the Collaborative Research Center 275 of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 1996 to 2001 . Since 1995 he has been the scientific director of the Blaubeuren Museum of Prehistory .

Conard deals with the early development of mankind in the Eurasian and South African region as well as the beginnings of agriculture and animal husbandry. On these issues he carried out numerous excavations and field work in Syria (Ain Dabbour, Kaus Kozah), South Africa (Geelbek Dunes and Sibudu Cave ) and Iran (Gahr-i-Boof). His main research area in Germany includes in particular prehistoric excavations in caves on the Swabian Alb ( Hohler Fels , Vogelherdhöhle , Geißenklösterle , Hohlenstein-Stadel ), during which he came across the oldest sculptural works of art in the world. The most recent sensational finds include the Vogelherd mammoth and the Venus von Schelklingen ( Alb-Danube district ) from Aurignacia, discovered in September 2008 .

Conard lives in Tübingen . On May 8, 2010 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg by Prime Minister Stefan Mappus . In 2011 he was accepted as a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
