Adelbert von Keller
Heinrich Adelbert Keller , von Keller from 1854 , (* July 5, 1812 in Pleidelsheim ; † March 13, 1883 in Tübingen ) was a German Romance studies and German studies scholar who, through his numerous editions and translations of medieval and early modern literature and his research on Swabian dialect got known.
Life
The son of the city pastor Johann Jakob Keller went to school in Stuttgart and from 1830 studied first theology in Tübingen , later modern philology with Ludwig Uhland and Moriz Rapp . After his studies he traveled to Paris to research old French manuscripts. From 1835 he taught modern languages as a private lecturer in Tübingen, from 1837 he was also the second librarian at the university library . From September 1840 to March 1841, on the advice of his doctor, he undertook a trip to Italy, which he used to research Italian manuscripts of the Middle Ages in Venice, Florence and Rome. Since 1841 associate professor, he was appointed full professor and senior librarian at the University of Tübingen in 1844. In 1850 he resigned from the post of librarian and devoted himself entirely to teaching and his numerous publications, including above all editions of texts from the Middle Ages as well as translations from French, Provencal, Spanish, Italian and English. 1858-1859 he was rector of the university.
From 1849 the Litterarian Society , founded in Stuttgart in 1839, was chaired by Keller. This bibliophile society had numerous prominent and wealthy members and was thus able to ensure the publication of larger and commercially less promising editions. For decades, Keller was the driving force behind the library of the Litterarian Society in Stuttgart , which, under his supervision, has become a series of publications of mediaeval and early modern source texts that has received worldwide attention. Within the series he published a. a. a monumental edition of the works of Hans Sachs .
Based on the model of Schmeller's Bavarian dictionary, Keller laid the basis for a Swabian dictionary over decades of research and collecting , which was taken care of by Hermann Fischer after his death and published in a total of seven volumes.
Adelbert von Keller was the father of the classical philologist Otto Keller (1838–1927), who taught in Freiburg, Graz and Prague . In 1852, at the request of Ottilie Wildermuth, he became the godfather of her son Hermann. Her husband Johann David Wildermuth, also born in Pleidelsheim, had been on friendly terms with Keller since childhood. He died after a long illness at the age of 70 in Tübingen.
There is an estate in the Tübingen University Library .
Honors
Keller was elected a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and other learned societies. In 1854 he was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which was associated with the personal title of nobility.
