Hugo von Langenstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo von Langenstein (attested between 1271 and 1298) was a Middle High German poet and wrote an extensive rhyming legend about the life and martyrdom of St. Martina , which he completed in 1293 .

Hugo von Langenstein was a member of the Teutonic Order on the Mainau , part of the Alsace-Burgundy Ballei . His father Arnold was a former ministerial officer of the Reichenau monastery and had donated the Kommende Mainau.

The "Martina" is considered to be the oldest sacred poetry from the Teutonic Order. It was intended for the table reading of the brothers who were ignorant of Latin. The legend is based on a Latin vita. For individual sections, learned Latin scripts were also included; Particularly important sources were the writings "De contemptu mundi" of Pope Innocent III. and the “Compendium theologicae veritatis” by Hugo Ripelin of Strasbourg .

There is only one undated copy of the seal, which is currently dated around or soon after 1300 ( Basel University Library cod. B VIII 27). The manuscript comes from the Basel Charterhouse, but seems to have reached its current location via Joseph von Laßberg , because he wrote in 1825 that he had discovered the manuscript in Konstanz.

To the reception

The Martina of Hugo von Langenstein in the edition of Keller 1856 is one of the central reference books in Arno Schmidt's old work Abend mit Goldrand (1975).
