Richard Landwehrmeyer

Richard Landwehrmeyer (born November 26, 1929 in Belm near Osnabrück , † January 6, 2006 in Berlin ) was a German librarian . From 1972 to 1987 he headed the Tübingen University Library and from 1987 to 1995 as General Director of the Berlin State Library (Prussian Cultural Heritage).

Live and act

Richard Landwehrmeyer was born on November 26, 1929 in Belm near Osnabrück. After studying subjects Romance and German in Freiburg i.Br . and Montpellier he received his doctorate in 1955 at the University of Freiburg i.Br . with a thesis on contemporary Spanish sonnet poetry . In 1956 he passed the state examination. This was followed from 1956 to 1958 by the library traineeship at the University Library Freiburg i.Br. on; After the examination for the higher library service at the Librarian Training Institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne in 1958, he took up a position as a librarian at the University Library Freiburg i.Br. on. In 1965 he moved to the University Library in Konstanz, where he was deputy director. In 1972 he was appointed chief library director of the Tübingen University Library as the successor to Walther Gebhardt . In 1987 he was appointed General Director of the Berlin State Library (Prussian Cultural Heritage), which he led until his retirement in 1995.

During his tenure as director of the Tübingen University Library, the development of this library into a modern service facility for science and study, the introduction of EDP into library work, the expansion of the special collection areas and the establishment of a restoration workshop. As General Director of the Berlin State Library (initially West Berlin), he was responsible for merging the two buildings of the State Library in West and East Berlin into a joint scientific library at two locations since 1989.
